Luke 3:21-38 ~ God in a List of Names?

When we read our Bibles we often tend to skip the genealogies. We usually think those sections of Bible as just a bunch of names of people that we don’t know, or need to know. And many times we miss the devotional benefit of them because of our attitude.

How should we look at them? Is there any spiritual benefit from them? 2 Timothy 3:16 tell us: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” So how does this passage apply to Luke 3:23-28?

I remember years ago my father was concerned about finding more information on our Jewish roots. This was a long and difficult process. Many of the people that had answers to missing links were dead, many of the documents were missing, many people did not want to discuss this matter as being Jewish was unpopular in Poland, and those that did have answers were scattered around the world.

But today, I have the answers! All thanks to the research done by my father.

Knowing that and looking at the genealogy of Luke helps me better appreciate the research done by this remarkable historian Luke. He took the time to present his readers with an accurate genealogy of Jesus. And we can benefit by careful study of Luke’s detailed work, for example, we learn: that Jesus is the promised king from the line of David (Luke 3:31); that he is a descendent of the royal line of the tribe of Judah (3:33); that he is the fulfillment of the promises given to Jacob, Isaac and Abraham (3:34, as well as being a descendent of Adam the son of God and the father of all people (3:38). Jesus is the Messiah, praise God for His faithfulness by sending his son to redeem all people that from sin.

Indeed, God is always faithful in His perfect time and way; and even the seemingly tedious details of a genealogy shout of His faithfulness, both to Israel 2000 years ago and to us today.

One thing that I love about reading this genaology is that we are able to see how Christ came through the specific line and goes all the way back to Adam. This is great to me because it continues to show God's Sovereignty in all things.
God had everything planned out from the very beginning. We can read through the prophesies in the old testament and see that the coming Messiah did not just happen to come upon the scene but it was rather planned out before the foundation of the world.
God has our lives planned out also!

Josh,

Good statement, "God has our lives planned out also." It is comforting to know that God is not so sloppy as to let our decisions wreck His plan.

I am so encouraged to read the genaology of Christ and seeing how God plans out everthing and everyone together to fulfill His plan in this world. It is amazing of how God used different varieties of people, from a little bit of good people to not so good people. It is so well plan out by God when I see different(Rom 8:28)
situations works together for good while in valley, it is impossible to see His plan that will over come the world. Yet, again....God Rules!

Your mention of searching for your family geneology reminded me that every name on the geneology of Joseph represents real people with real lives. They each had jobs and families and never knew how they would eventually fit into history. Even though we know nothing about some of these people, they were key individuals in Jesus' lineage and were all part of God's plan from the beginning. I wonder what part we will play in God's plan that has not yet been revealed.

Your post cuased me to really reflect on the importance of the genealogy. It is important for us to know the line was preserved though scholars disagree on some aspects. For me it made me think about my roots. My Grandfather and Grandmother came over from Germany. One day my grandmother heard a knock at the door. There standing were two coal miners holding my grandfather who had died in the mine just a couple hours earlier. Heritage is important and has significant impact on our lives. Today we do not know anything about my Dad’s family other then they came over on a freighter which would be the first one sunk during WWI. We know nothing about where they came from or their background. It is even possible we are even Jewish. Roots and family are important.
